TITLE IX - GET INVOLVED TO HELP SAVE COLLEGIATE AND HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING...
Federal Title IX panel sets schedule with town hall approach
The U.S. Department of Education has announced the dates and sites for town hall meetings planned by the Commission on Opportunity in Athletics, the panel appointed by Secretary of Education Rod Paige to examine Title IX.
Ted Leland, athletics director at Stanford University, and Cynthia Cooper, former WNBA star, co-chair the commission.
"These meetings will give us a chance to listen, observe and absorb the views of those who care deeply about this issue," Leland said. "We look forward to these very important conversations in communities across the country."
Each meeting will include panels of four invited speakers and comments from the general public on the various topics addressed in the commission's charter.

NUTRTION INFORMATION - SAMPLE DIET PLAN FOR WRESTLERS
The following is a sample diet to go by to maintain nutrition. Please avoid fried, fatty or high calorie intake (fast foods, candy, donuts, chocolate, etc.) Proper weight loss is done over time and without doing starvation or dehydration. It has been proven that starvation and dehydration equates to a 14% loss in athletic performance (and thats the average. It can be even higher in some athletes especially younger athletes.) Every wrestler should maintain proper nutritional intake, meaning eating something from all food groups everyday.
A pill, protein shake or vitamin/protein supplement does NOT take the place of good, wholesome food. Weight loss is a combination of good, hard work combined with eating healthy and sensibly.
The following lists possible meals. The numbered items listed are to reference a meal for that meal time for that day, i.e. Breakfast #1 is for the Breakfast meal for that day, #2 is for the next day, etc. DO NOT EAT #1-7 AT ONE SITTING! This also provides variety or if you dont like a particular item, there are alternatives. Also you dont have to eat everything listed for a particular meal, nor do you have to eat all five meals (I personally dont snack between breakfast and lunch and between lunch and dinner
but thats just me.) Bottom line, this is flexible to fit any wrestler. This works in combination with a strong workout regimen
running 3-4 miles first thing in the morning, lifting weights mid day and wrestling 1.5-2 hours every night, six times a week.

2. Chicken, ham, tuna or lean roast beef sandwich to replace turkey sandwich above.

2. 2 grilled or broiled chicken thighs (no skin), 1 cup green or yellow vegetables, ½ cup peas or corn, 1 slice whole wheat bread, vegetable salad, 2 cups low fat milk
3. Spaghetti 2 cups spaghetti noodles, ½ cup tomato sauce, ¼ cup lean ground beef, 1 Tbs Parmesan cheese, vegetable salad
4. 2 bean burritos made of 1 small flour tortilla, ¼ cup refried beans, 2 Tbs grated cheddar cheese, 2 Tbs salsa, ½ cup rice topped with salsa
5. Chef Salad dark, leafy lettuce, diced ham, cheese, sliced bell pepper, uncooked broccoli, chopped carrots, kidney beans, low-fat Ranch dressing
6. Tuna casserole 1 cup pasta, 3 oz tuna (water packed, not oil packed), ½ cup non-fat plain yogurt, ¼ tsp garlic, ¼ cup mushrooms, ¼ cup onions, supplement with ½ cup peas; 1 small roll; vegetable salad
7. 4 oz lean beef steak, 1 baked potato topped with cottage cheese, spinach salad topped with mixed vegetables and a non-fat/non-oil dressing, 1 slice of whole wheat bread
Fluids
Keep fluids up until the day of a match. Water weight is considerably easier to lose than solid weight. Fluids also flush your system keeping your natural antibiotics working (wrestling, unfortunately, takes place during the height of cold/flu season). Juices are also a good supplement in place of snacks. Gatoraide/sports drinks help replenish body nutrients/electrolytes but I recommend this after your workout not during practice or during a tournament or before a match as it will lead to cotton mouth during competition/practice. Water is the best fluid to drink during a tournament or before a match or during practice.
Vitamins
First and foremost, check with your doctor regarding vitamins. This is what I take but your doctor will know what works or what may not work for you 500 mgs Vit. C, Vit B12, a multiple vitamin. I also take ginko biloba and Siberian ginseng. A day before competition I will take Echinacea Gold Seal as well as the day of a tournament/match and the day after. Studies have proven that taking Echinacea more than 10 days straight reduces the effect. If I have to get on a plane, I take the morning of my flight AirBorn a tablet that dissolves in water. I take it again when returning home on the plane.
Protein Supplements
I have never been a believer that protein supplements do any more than good, hard work can do. Creatine, in some states, is illegal. I have also read studies where dehydration through hard wrestling in combination with Creatine adversely affects the kidneys.
Bottom line, a pill wont make you a champion. Thats something only good, hard work can provide.
Work hard. Eat healthy. Keep your fluids up. Then work hard again.

Ask Ed Giese - World Class Wrestler...
Question: What are your thoughts on lifting during the season. How many times per week and what type of work out?
Answer: Weight lifting is a valuable tool for any wrestler, you can never be to strong. What you need to understand, is how to lift pre-season and in-season. Pre-season lifting (for instance, now till your 1st competition)should consist on heavy weights and lower reps. Your goal now should be to build strength. I would suggest lifting 3-4 times a week, with a day off between lifting days. You need to rest a day after lifting, to let your muscles heal, that is what will build the muscle.
In season lifting should consist of lower weights and heigher reps. The idea here is to maintain your strength and build on it slightly. Also, you can help your shape out as well. In season, I used to do alot of circuit training. Circuit training is getting 12-15 exercises in a row, doing lower weights and higher reps with minimal rest time in between. You should be breathing heavy when you finish. I hope this helps.

Ask Ed Giese - World Class Wrestler...
Question: What is a good work out for upper body strength if you do not have access to weight equipment?
Answer: Without access to weights, your best bet is to do push-ups (arms in, arms extended to sides, and arms extended in front of your head). I would also suggest doing isometrics when possible. Isometrics are exercises using the same motions you would use with free-weights, but with resistence. For example, put you arms in a curl position, have you partner hold down on your wrists and do curls against their pressure. You can also do negatives, where you finish the exercise and have your partner push down on your arms while trying to hold the position. Be creative, you can get a great work-out without weights if you make the time.

Ask Ed Giese - World Class Wrestler...
Question: Ok say if you enter a wrestling tournament and you can't use your high school singlet can you use a free style singlet even though it isn't a free style tournament?
Answer: Most tournaments that are "open" have no uniform guidlines, so you can use any singlet freestyle or otherwise.

ED'S WORD - SEE WHAT ED HAS TO SAY ABOUT ILLINOIS WRESTLING AND THROUGHOUT THE NATION
ED EWOLDT...
1. Biggest news in Wrestling is of course the USA Boycott of the World Freestyle Championships in Iran. Iran would not or could not guarantee the safety of the USA wrestlers, so we boycotted. Reasonable. I wonder why none of our so-called friends in the world did not do the same???? Sounds like 1980 again. I imagine the Greco will go on, as it is in Moscow. Too bad, particularly for guys like Kerry McCoy who had planned on retiring this year. Wrestling at this level takes a lot out of you as you grow older, unless you are a HWT.
2. On a better note, Rulon Gardner has joined other Olympic hopefuls in Colorado and has started training for 2004 in Athens, despite losing a toe to frostbite.
3. It is ironic that Cael Sanderson gave up his right to the World's last year because of loyalty to the Iowa State Team, since the World's has been postponed to October and that interfered with the College practice regime. This was of course due to September 11th and now here he is again, not being able to go because of the boycott.
4. Charles J. Pankow, originally from Lyons High School has passed away. He was a two time state qualifier for Lyons, placing 4th in 1950 at 154. He enrolled at Indiana U. where he was the 147 pound Big Ten Champion in 1953. He most recently lived in Downer's Grove.
5. Don't forget the Title 9 meeting at the Drake Hotel in Chicago on September 17th - 9:30am - 12:00pm will be a panel discussion. From 2:00 to 5:30pm will be speakers from the floor. You do not have to speak to attend, but I urge you to attend if at all possible. September 18th has the commission speaking and evaluating. There will be no opportunity for the public to speak, but YOU MAY OBSERVE. Numbers do count. If you speak, your remarks have to pertain to high school and junior college. HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE.
6. I wrote this back in December of 2001, but it did not get up on the Internet, so I repeat it now. It's time for Blackhawk, College of DuPage, Joliet, and McHenry, plus others to start their Wrestling programs again. However, to do some means hat pressure backed by proof that is needed will have to be exerted by high schools in their respective areas. I would think that a 4-year school would want this to happen and if so, why aren't they involved with trying to start these programs? I would think that a 4 year school would want to use these community colleges for a number of reasons, i.e. - say a 4 year school recruits a wrestler, who has difficulty maintaining grades for whatever reason. They can send him to a JC with the understanding that he will return to the 4-year school when his grades stabilize. Say a Wrestler's grades will not let him into the 4 year school, that school should get involved with getting him into a JC program with, again, the understanding that he will be going to the 4 year school that made this possible. There is nothing wrong with a JC - It is a good place to mature physically, mentally and emotionally, plus it is relatively inexpensive. If JC's worked it correctly, a first year All-American could sit out his second year - get his AA and have 3 years plus a red-shirt year at a 4 year school. JC'S AND 4-YEAR SCHOOLS SHOULD LOOK INTO THIS - WHAT IT REALLY SAYS IS: 'MARRY UP.' Football and Basketball have been doing this for years.
7. Back in December of 2001 I read an interesting article in the Chicago Tribune's editorial section by Derrick Z. Jackson in regards to the growing graduation gap in college football. Last year, he wrote that schools would be banned from college bowl games if their team had an overall graduation rate of under 35 percent. They would be banned if graduation rate of black players lagged 20 or more percentage points behind their white teammates. Then came the Knight Commission's report. They proposed that by 2007, teams that have graduated fewer that 50 percent of their players should be banned from post-season play. IF THAT WERE THE RULE TODAY, THAT WOULD CANCEL NEARLY EVER BOWL GAME.
Rose Bowl: Miami has a rate of 41%
Orange Bowl: Maryland is 39%
Sugar Bowl: Louisiana State is 40%
Fiesta Bowl: Colorado is 45%
Citrus Bowl: Michigan is 45%, Tennessee is 42%
Gator Bowl: Virginia Tech is 46%
Cotton Bowl: Arkansas is 30%, Oklahoma is 36%
Outback Bowl: Ohio State is 33%
Peach Bowl: Auburn is 41%
Liberty Bowl: Brigham Young is 21%, Louisville is 29%
Silicon Valley: Fresno State is 28%, Michigan State is 40%
Sun Bowl: Washington State is 49%
Corn Bowl: Kansas State is 47%
Alamo Bowl: Texas Tech is 42%
Motor City Bowl: Cincinnati is 38%
...and the list goes on. Jackson is a writer for the Boston Globe. These percentages reflect the football program only, not the school overall or any other athletic program. LET'S MAKE SURE WRESTLING IS NEVER THAT LOW.
8. I'm wondering how many of our Wrestling family have served the State of Illinois in more than two capacities?? Wrestler, Coach, Official, Bench Official - all downstate. I can think of 4.
Rom Semetis of Dixon: WCOBench
Tom Heniff - Oak Lawn: WCO
Larry TenPas: WCO
Clarence "Bud" Weick: WCO
Any others? Let me know:
228 S. Willinston
Wheaton, IL 60187
Phone: (630) 665-2591
Jim Craig has 3 if you would include Iowa, where he was a state PW - C and O in Illinois.
9. Don't forget to save the weekend of April 26th and 27th for the State Hall of Fame/State Lifetime Awards and the All State Banquet. They will be held at Park Place of Countryside. More information will be given to you at a later date.
10. Tom Gauger will be teaching K through 8 this year. I hope he continues to coach Wrestling.
11. Still do not know who the new coaches at Yorkville, East Aurora, Geneseo, Marion, Hersey or Sandwich, or Hinsdale Central. Let me know.
12. The AAU Nationals for grades 9, 10, and 11 may be held at Navy Pier, March 28, 29, and 30th, 2003. I have no idea what their new facilities are like, but it would be good for our State to host this, but we would have to have more adults involved than Louisiana did this year.
